Take a moment. Stare at a dollar bill. What comes to mind? What do you feel? Anxious? Happy? Thankful?
If you were to give it away, who or what would you give it to?
In today’s text, Jesus challenges the religious leaders about with whom they are loyal? They try to trap him with a question about whether it is lawful to pay taxes to the emperor. Instead, Jesus turns the tables and challenges them to give to God what belongs to God.
As the people of God, we must wrestle with what Jesus means when he asks us to give to God. If you think about it, everything we have is given to us by God. God only asks for us to return a portion of it so that the gospel can continue to flourish throughout our community.
However, there is another kind of currency. Every single one of us has something to share beyond monetary gifts. What is your gift? What has God blessed you with that could be shared with others? Are you a good listener? Are you a talented musician? Are you an artist? Do you like to fix things? Are you kind? Do you have a passion for justice?
The list goes on and on and Jesus has called us to share our gifts for the benefit of humanity. When we share our gifts with our neighbor, we are in turn sharing them with God. So together, let’s give it away.
