You’ve earned it so it’s all yours right? That’s pretty much how most people view the “fruits of their labors.” But what if God asks you to let go of the fruit?
Jesus, in his usual life challenging way, takes us and the religious leaders of his day on a little journey. He questions how we view the fruits of our labors.
In today’s text, Jesus shares a parable to make a point of how God owns everything everything and has given it to us to take care of and share. Jesus says, “42Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes’? 43Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom. 44The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.” What’s he trying to tell us?
But Jesus uses a story to help us understand. There is a responsibility in following him. And the Pharisees are angry and we have a challenge to look at our own lives and question how we view all that we have. Instead, he asks us to let go of the fruit.
