What is real freedom? In this election season we will be able to cast our ballot which is a freedom given to U.S. citizens. It is good to exercise this right. We also have many other freedoms in this country that are outlined in the Constitution. We simply are asked to use those freedoms responsibly.
However, the freedom we often talk about on this day, Reformation Day, is an entirely different kind of freedom. It is important that we don’t get them confused.
Real freedom comes in receiving the gift of salvation, life and forgiveness through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a gift, a free gift. There are no conditions placed on the freedom we have in Christ. Jesus simply asks us to exercise that freedom by loving our neighbor.
In today’s gospel reading we hear in John 8:31-36 we hear Jesus say, “If the Son sets you free, you are free in deed.”
