I’m sure you have seen when a building is demolished in order to rebuild something even better. It’s a spectacular site. Sometimes in our own lives things need to be torn down and rebuilt. Even our souls.
In the gospel story this week Jesus is at the temple and drives out the money changers. This was a yearly event during Passover when people would come from all over to sell and trade their goods. But Jesus challenges them by saying, “Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!” People in the temple basically ask him why he is doing this. Jesus responds, “Tear this temple down and I will rebuild it in three days.”
What is he getting at? How could one physically rebuild a temple in three days? He was talking about the temple of his body foreshadowing his death and resurrection. In other words he’s telling them and us to not let your rituals, traditions and institutions keep you from focusing on the one most important thing, Jesus Christ.
